As leaders, we all face those moments of uncertainty.

Something goes wrong, and suddenly you’re wondering: Do I need to step in, or should I trust the team to figure this out? For most of us, the default is to dive into the details.

It feels safer. But here's the problem:

The more you control, the more you end up stifling growth. The trick is learning when and how to let go.

Tend the Garden

"No Shaun, not a gardening analogy!"

I know, I know. Hold on to that cringe for just a moment. The fact is, your team has more in common with a garden than you might think.

They both need:

  • A healthy environment (good soil)
  • Space to work (room to breath)
  • Someone who's there to help them grow (a gardener–in this case you.)

A good gardener knows you can’t tug on the plants to make them grow faster. Instead, you create the right conditions: good soil, sunlight, water.

The same goes for your team.

Instead of constant supervision, you need to set up an environment where your team can thrive on their own.

Here are 3 ways to create an environment where your people grow:

1. Define the Outcome, Not Just the Tasks

Instead of assigning a checklist, outline what success looks like.

Help your team understand why their work matters, and let them figure out the best way to get there.

2. Emphasize Progress, Not Perfection

Shift your focus from “Is it done exactly how I would do it?” to “Are we moving in the right direction?”

Celebrate small wins, encourage learning from missteps, and foster a sense of momentum.

3. Build Trust Through Transparency

The more your team understands your goals, priorities, and thought process, the more they’ll trust your judgment and align their efforts with the bigger picture.

You don’t need to choose between being hands-off and being a micromanager.

By setting the stage, showing the way, and stepping back just enough, you allow your team to flourish—and in turn, you grow as a leader.

Reflection for the Week:
Where in your day-to-day can you step back and let someone else take ownership? What might change if you did?

Keep leading boldly,
Shaun
